- Chesterton was an early 20th century writer.
- Urban settings -transformed them into exciting locations for dramatic stories.

Northrop Frye: Heroic romance
- Thrillers were stories that took ordinary people & threw them into extraordinary situations.
- E.g. Seven pounds, Saw, Enemy of the state, Phonebooth, Flightplan, Snakes on a plane, Panic room, Red eye.
John Cawelti: Exotic
- Thrillers took the elements of ordinary life & added an exotic element.
W.H. Matthews: Mazes & Labyrinths
- How human beings have a fascination for physical puzzles - often seen in mazes & labyrinths.
- Idea of a mysterious quest in a confined location that feels like a labyrinth.
- E.g. Angels & demands, Saw.

- The audience is given a partial view of things - with important details being obscured.
- E.g. Se7en

- Structured around a series of questions for which the audience is led to want answers.

- Analysed all narratives in terms of codes that operate moment by moment.
- Enigma codes - moments in a narrative where the audience is led to ask a question.
- Enigma codes are very important for telling the story in a suspenseful way.
